A History of Impact
Founded in Chicago in 1905 by Paul Harris, Rotary began as a place where professionals from diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful friendships. Over a century later, it has evolved into a powerful international organization whose members have transformed countless lives through their dedication and generosity. From local community projects to global health initiatives, Rotary's impact is far-reaching and enduring.
Our Greatest Success: Eradicating Polio
One of Rotary's most ambitious and successful initiatives is the global effort to eradicate polio. Since launching PolioPlus in 1985, Rotary and its partners, including the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, have reduced polio cases by 99.9% worldwide. We are "This Close" to a polio-free world, having vaccinated over 2.5 billion children. This monumental achievement demonstrates the power of collective action and sustained commitment.
Rotary has contributed over $2.6 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 3 billion children in 122 countries from the paralyzing disease. Our advocacy efforts have played a crucial role in securing more than $10 billion from donor governments.
The Rotary Foundation: Doing Good in the World
The Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts into service projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. Since it was founded more than 100 years ago, the Foundation has spent more than $4 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects. With your help, we can make lives better in your community and around the world.
The Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotary members and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world. It helps Rotary members to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace by improving health, providing quality education, improving the environment, and alleviating poverty.
